In Hawaiian mythology, an ʻaumakua is a family god, often a deified ancestor. The Hawaiian plural of ʻaumakua is nā ʻaumākua. ʻAumākua frequently manifested as animals such as sharks or owls. ʻAumākua were worshipped at localities where they were believed to "dwell".
